New Generation Degrees - Majors

For general information about the new Bachelor of Arts degree: Bachelor of Arts website

Four Majors in the new BA degree are offered through the School of Historical Studies in 2008:

Ancient World Studies (AWS)
AWS is wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary in nature covering the interacting worlds of Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Near East. Ancient texts and material culture are studied together to provide a broad understanding of the earliest civilisations. Many subjects provide access to the archaeological collections held in the Ian Potter Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Victoria. A capstone subject is offered at third year giving a distinctive cohort experience and pathways through the Major.

Australian Studies (AS)
The AS major is multi-disciplinary and takes this approach to understanding Australian society, politics, history and culture. Nine core subjects are taught by the Australian Centre, the remainder being drawn from across the Faculty. A capstone subject is offered at third year giving a distinctive cohort experience and pathways through the Major.

Classics
This major offers a focused study of ancient languages (Ancient Greek and/or Latin) augmented by optional subjects from the AWS program. It provides streams for students who are beginning their ancient language study at university or have already undertaken studies at VCE level. The major allows for specialisation in one or other of the languages or combined study of both. A capstone subject is offered at third year giving a distinctive cohort experience and pathways through the Major.

History
First year students within the History major are exposed to the discipline through subjects that are broad in theme, time and place. At 2nd/3rd year, students become more focused and are introduced to the rigorous research requirements of historical study at an advanced level. A capstone subject is offered at 3rd year giving a distinctive cohort experience and pathways through the Major.
