Checklist for commencing RHD students
School of Historical Studies Postgraduate Email Lists:
- Set up your postgraduate email account at: http://www.infodiv.unimelb.edu.au/email/student/activating.html
- Subscribe to school email lists, both official and unofficial. Once you are on these lists you will receive information from the postgraduate student representatives, the Research Higher Degrees Officer as well as notices about conferences, seminars, workshops, admin, jobs.
To subscribe to the Official List:
Send an email to mailserv@unimelb.edu.au using the email address you most commonly use leaving the subject heading blank. In the body of the message write: subscribe hist-pgradofficial [your email address] end.
eg:
subscribe hist-pgradofficial
j.bloggs@pgrad.unimelb.edu.au
end
The official list is used by the School for matters of School business.

Send an email to mailserv@unimelb.edu.au leaving the subject heading blank. In the body of the message write: subscribe hist-pgrads [your email address] end.
This email allows general discussion amongst postgraduates in the school. All enrolled postgraduate students can post to this list if they are a subscriber. You are welcome to send notices to the unofficial list including accommodation available, events, etc. This is your communication network with your fellow students, for things that fall outside the official business of the SHS. The address is: hist-pgrads@unimelb.edu.au.

Attend:
- Inductions offered by the School, Faculty of Arts, and the School of Graduate Research
- Postgraduate seminars held at 5pm on Monday nights in the Jessie Webb Library
- School of Historical Studies Postgraduate Work-in-Progress Days which are held twice a year
- The School’s morning teas are a great way to meet people. Held at 10:45am Monday to Friday in the Margaret Kiddle Room, 3rd floor John Medley West
- Postgraduate afternoon teas are held each Tuesday at 3:30pm in the Old Quad Common Room located on the 1st floor in the south-west corner of the Old Quadrangle (Classics and Archaeology)
- The biannual Postgraduate student dinner or ‘Snifters’
Around the Libraries, SGR
- Attend library induction – learn about Inter Library Loans, the Melbourne-Monash protocol
- Sign up for Endnote training, and other IT/skills workshops at: www.lib.unimelb.edu.au/skills.html
- The School of Graduate Research runs the UpSkills Program. This is a series of short courses and seminars for currently enrolled postgraduate students. More information can be found at: www.gradresearch.unimelb.edu.au/programs/skills/
