Since its inception in 1858 Australian Football has become a rich part of our sporting, social, and cultural life. To celebrate football’s development over the last 150 years, the School of Historical Studies at the University of Melbourne, together with the School of Human Movement, Recreation, and Performance at Victoria University, and the Victorian chapter of the Australian Society for Sports History, are hosting a conference to explore the history of this great Australian game.
Events include:
- ‘Australian Football’s Past, Present and Future’, a keynote address by Associate Professor Bob Stewart, a prominent scholar of the history of the game and its ongoing development, and Chair of the Sport Management and Policy Group at Victoria University.
- A Community Football Heritage Forum featuring a series of presentations on how to preserve, record and present your local football club’s history.
- ‘The Game is Not the Same’, a special panel discussion on how the game of Australian Football has changed since the 19th Century, moderated by Gerard Whateley (ABC Radio Sport), with David Parkin, Brendon Gale, Dr June Senyard (The University of Melbourne) and Associate Professor Lionel Frost (Monash University).
- A wide range of papers on the history of footy such as: The passions of barrackers; Women in football; Up There Cazaly; ‘Aussie-rules’ and migrants; and football in Darwin.
Conference registration is free, but bookings are essential.
