The Cordner Oration is named in honour of the Cordner family whose association with the University of Melbourne has been unbroken since 1903. Dr Donald Cordner, who studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, was recruited from the Melbourne University Football Club and went on to play 166 games with the Melbourne Football Club. He won the MFC Best and Fairest in 1943, the Brownlow Medal in 1946, and was a Melbourne premiership player in 1941 and 1948. Don Cordner’s brothers Dennis, John and Ted also played for the Melbourne Football Club and were students of the University of Melbourne. Their father Edward and uncle Harry were also students of the University and played for Melbourne University Football Club when it was part of the VFL . Dr Cordner’s son, Associate Professor Chris Cordner, is a teacher and researcher with the School of Philosophy, Anthropology and Social Enquiry in the Faculty of Arts.
