Website: www.australian.unimelb.edu.auThe Australian Centre has received national and international recognition for its interdisciplinary examination of contemporary Australian culture, society and institutions in their global context. Indeed, the University of Melbourne’s reputation as the educator of future Australian leaders, and a major destination for international students, is dependent upon its capacity for outstanding teaching and debate about Australia. The Australian Centre contributes to informed, critical engagement with Australia’s past, present and future.
The Centre’s teaching is strongly informed by research interests. All full-time teaching and research staff are research active and hold ARC Discovery and/or Linkage grants, a number with multi-disciplinary research teams. The Centre also has specialist library collections, and hosts regular guest seminars, lectures and public programs, as well as major cultural and literary annual awards. Principal areas of specialisation include: memory, life-narrative and belonging; migration, ethnicity and marginality; national identity, community and place; histories of poverty and welfare; arts and creative production; indigenous and nonindigenous relations.
